Robert McEntee and Dan FogelbergAugust 13th, 2008

I was knocked unconscious by Dan's passing and I'm still trying to wake up and come to terms with the reality. In that effort, and in the spirit of affectionate remembrance, I offer this up.

"Over Peoria" just plain fell out about a week ago while I was sitting on the old blue velvet couch which used to live in Dan's summer place, a humble house built on the coast of Maine in the 1800s. Not the first song to have been reeled in while sitting on this relic, I can only pretend that it's worthy of its birthplace.

Longest serving DF band-mate Michael "Zoot" Hanna is playing the wonderful B-3 organ lines throughout the song. Thanks Mike. Bags at 11:00 AM.

Also my thanks go out to the fans of Dan's music whom I've met through the years in his band. You've all been friendly, sentient beings who truly appreciated Dan's finesse and the degree of focus he articulated with his music. It was a pleasure to meet each of you and to bask in that refracted light.

Finally......... Thanks to you Dan for 30 years of friendship, laughter, work, wit and wisdom. And thanks for boldly reflecting the beauty, detail, density, shadow and light for all who have ears to hear it in a noise filled world.

Over Peoria

you were never big on goodbyes, never big on goodbyes
you didn't let on, and I never got wise
that's all fine and well and good
the world's still spinning as it should

to make a moonrise, Over Peoria
as the raven flies, Over Peoria

you were the baby of the family, everyone's golden child
you were playing in 'the Coachmen', everyone knew you got style
set out west to conquer and paint the world
it took a few tries but you found your perfect girl

and the rain turned to snow, Over Peoria
a decade of blue skies, Over Peoria

you were never big on goodbyes, surprise surprise
just how much, I now realize
when I travel across the great midwest
I always book a window seat

and keep an eye out, Over Peoria
there's blue sky, Over Peoria
got sunshine, Over Peoria
